For Immediate Release: Siksika Board of Education Celebrates 35 Years with a New Commemorative Logo

Siksika Nation, Alberta – May 24, 2024 – The Siksika Board of Education (SBE) proudly unveils a new commemorative logo for the 2024-2025 school year, celebrating 35 years of educational sovereignty and excellence. This milestone marks the SBE’s remarkable journey since 1989, when it was incorporated and took over control of education from the Federal Government.

From its humble beginnings with just two schools and serving approximately 725 K-12 students, the SBE has grown in response to the community’s needs. The subsequent renovations and expansions, including the opening of Siksika Nation High School in 1996, the Storefront School in 2009, and the Siksika Outreach School in 2011, have allowed the SBE to now serve approximately 1500 students with a dedicated staff of over 185.

The new logo, designed by a talented Grade 6 student, Dane One Runner, from Chief Old Sun School, was selected from approximately 90 submissions. It beautifully encapsulates the SBE’s ethos, featuring “35 Years” alongside symbols of Siksika culture and education—a book flanked by two teepees, surrounded by sweetgrass, and two pencils crossed at the bottom.

The logo was revealed at a special ceremony at Chief Old Sun School, attended by students, staff, the Board of Directors, community members, and Elders. The event was blessed by Elder and Horn Woman Wilda Yellow Old Woman and followed by a celebratory pizza feast sponsored by the SBE Board of Directors.

This logo will be an integral part of the SBE’s official branding from August 2024 to July 2025 and kicks off a series of events, including the Siksika Board of Education, Education Fair & Pow Wow on October 18-19, 2024. The board extends heartfelt thanks to the staff, community, and especially the students, who are the heart of the SBE’s mission.

In line with the SBE’s Education Plan under Engaging Relations, the board reaffirms its commitment to fostering meaningful relationships and inclusive dialogue to support and uplift Siksika students.
